Whore Yourself Out…on the Internet.

March 18, 2009

So with less than 3 weeks to go, I think it’s time I do my own “field” research and get a feel for how real, certified “geeks” go about “geeking.”

I’ve stumbled upon a blog by a man named Hutch Carpenter, whose blog tagline reads “I’m Not Actually a Geek.”

Needless to say, I was sold right there.

In his about me section, he mentions getting his current job by means of social media. Social media is basically whatever pops up about you when someone googles you (Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, blogs, etc.) Let’s be real, no one hires you without googling you first.

Next task? Making sure the internet-version of me is, well, awesome.

Blogging Discoveries

March 17, 2009

So in my path to “geek-dom,” I have learned a few things.

A) If you don’t blog regularly, you lose readers/followers.

B) Regularly means daily… if not twice a day

C) You should probably blog about something you know about, otherwise you’ll hit roadblocks where well, you avoid blogging because you don’t know what to blog about.

D) You should blog about things that interest people, and things that are timely to ensure the most traffic.

E) Example: Keywords from today that’ll help bring readers to this post include: Dancing With the Stars, American Idol, Natasha Richardson, Economy, AIG
Overall Key Words: Miley Cyrus, Jonas Brothers, Recession, Twitter, Facebook, Barack Obama, NCAA, March Madness, etc (I hope I get at least one reader from this “search engine” trick.)

Think I’m leaning Macbook… It seems really fun and user-friendly. I need user-friendly things.

From Nerd to Geek…

March 11, 2009

Just another Tuesday…Well no, not really. This Tuesday, March 10th, I combined my passion for entertainment television with my desire to go “geek,” and well, produced a piece that if given 10 minutes, would be pure comedy.Unfortunately, I have a fraction of that airtime, so let’s just hope someone laughs.

I produced a piece with Vik Sahay, who plays Lester Patel on the NBC comedy, “Chuck.” Haven’t seen Chuck? In short, the characters are members of the “Nerd Herd” at a store called Buy More. If you haven’t figured it out by now – I’ll spell it out … it’s a parody of the “Geek Squad” at Best Buy.

Anyway we set up the shoot as a sort of “mockumentary.” Camera discovers Vik checking out a “Chuck” dvd at Best Buy, he then identifies himself, establishes that he’s doing “field research” and goes on the harass a member of the real Geek Squad. He eventually get’s the “geek” agent to let him tag along on an emergency house visit, and in between jokes and getting into a Geek Squad car, ends up at Beverly Hills home, on a house call… only to discover it was a mere printer installation. Throughout the whole segment, Vik essentially implies he’s a tech genius, that this Geek Squad-er should know who is he and help him on his research mission, and that he really wants to just “get inside” the agent so that he can become the ultimate Nerd Herder.

FYI- he’s acting the entire time. He’s not really like this. This was a fictionalized production. The real Vik Sahay… hmm, well I can’t really write a fair assessment, because I think he was joking half the time (or well, at least I hope…because it’s not like our banter was exactly the friendliest, either.) He’s from Canada, has lived in LA for like a year and a half, getting used to the whole driving everywhere in traffic thing, and um…DOESN’T use Gmail. Seriously, who does that? How can you be a member of the Nerd Herd and NOT use Gmail? Earthlink, really? He’s totally missing out on fab gchat conversations. With me.

I’m honest…honest about lying.

March 9, 2009

So I made that statement yesterday, the one about going to CNET everyday? Well. I forgot to today. Therefore, I lied. I apologize.

On a side note, tomorrow I will be having the ultimate geek experience…rather, as “geek” as you can go in Hollywood… well actually in this case, “Nerd.”

To be continued tomorrrow…

Knowledge is power?

March 8, 2009

Two posts in one day! O-M-G.

I’ve decided to visit http://www.cnet.com everyday for the next 27 days, read at least an article or two, and summarize my discoveries/learnings.

That’s SO geek, right?

P.S. I updated the side blog, Khanversation Pieces- check it, yo.

Vimeo versus YouTube

March 8, 2009

OK so back to “geek-ing.”

I haven’t fully disclosed the details of my venture with Steven Kim, but here are the updates.

I’ve compiled a list, with your help of course, of the ultimate questions that people want to answer. Or well, WOULD answer, if asked.

I’ve decided on the camera of choice – the Flip looks like a winner.

Now, I must decide whether to post video on Vimeo or YouTube. YouTube has become a place that’s sort of flooded with videos, and from the research I’ve done, Vimeo looks like a better choice. I mean – you can watch things in HD (and if I’m getting an HD Flip, might as well have the video look awesome once it’s posted, right?)

I’m assuming most of you are unfamiliar with Vimeo, so check it out @ http://vimeo.com/help/basics , and let me know what you think.

The launch of the new Blog

A Facebook Betrayal…

March 5, 2009

In case you haven’t heard… Facebook is changing the way it does things. And… in my opinion, for the worse. I’m guessing they’re trying to compete with twitter. Check it out.

facebook1

I’m not sure how I feel about Facebook’s real-time, Twitter-like updates. It almost feels like it’s TOO much.

FYI… my “side” blog launches tonight. Stories await.

I lied…

March 4, 2009

Sort of. I said I’d have details on my new blog today…
I have no new details. Deciding on a template, already have a focus and a name and heck, even the first entry…
I’m just rather indecisive.

But I think it’s worth the wait. The one tech-savvy thing I’ve learned is that layout and visual appeal is half the battle.

For real though, a new blog WILL be published in the next 24 hours.
